Old Fashioned Snow Cream

Snow Cream

There’s no more wonderful a seasonal treat than old fashioned snow cream (and oddly enough, it seems to be a Southern thing). A wonderful winter treat that your kids will look forward to every year. There are different ways you can make it. If you want it to be richer, you can use half a 14 oz. can of sweetened condensed milk instead of regular milk or cream.

Thank you, for sharing Mama Peggy’s snow cream recipe. She sure sounds like a very special lady. I will let you know how my snow cream turns out. God bless you and your family. This is a special way to keep her memory alive. Take care from Winterville, North Carolina.

The recipe, for snow cream was delicious. I really enjoyed it Thank you for sharing with us!

Kevin

I’m glad you liked it, Deana. We didn’t see a lot of snow when I was growing up in North Carolina, so when we did get snow, Mama’s snow cream was definitely a treat.

Grandma used to make it every winter! I grew up in Yadkin county. Always used sweetened condensed milk. Grandma’s been gone 18 years ago, but this brings back good memories!

Wanda

I have always loved snow cream. We also used chocolate milk to make it…Yum

When we were growing up mama always made snow cream . She would get upset if the snow mixed with Sleet! The fluffy stuff was what she wanted. We would sit around our kerosene heater, eating snow cream and would end up with “brain freeze”. Great memories of mom doing that and sisters and a brother loving it and each other. I make it now, freeze it and my grandchildren have it when they come. That is, if I save them any!!!

I remember this before I do ice cream !! we lived in the country and this was a GREAT treat !!
I still have it every time it snows. which is not often here in Eastern N C !! Hope I can get enough snow tomorrow to make some !! wonderful childhood memory !!!

Been making this for 50 years. Soft powdery snow is best. Sleet gives it a crystally texture that I don’t like. I have tried different flavors but like vanilla best. I use evaporated milk to do the snow cream.

if you wanted chocolate snow cream you could make it the same but instead of vanilla you could use hot chocolate

shelby

make sure the hot chocolate is cold chocolate so let it cool

Gayle Middaugh

It’s best to use powdered sugar and cocoa instead of chocolate milk

👍mama Peggy my mother also made it this way I googled it i couldn’t remember the ingredients Thanks😇

Wow… Same here…
When my folks would take me to Big Bear in Southern CA, back in the ’50’s, we’d stop by the side of the road and mom would fill cups with snow and add the other ingredients to make Snow Shakes… I needed to make sure I remembered it correctly, too… 😉

By the way… If you make this at home in a warm house, it helps if you chill the bowl for a few minutes before you gather the snow…

I love this but it has WAYYYY to much sugar. When I was finished I had a thick layer of literally just sugar at the bottom. It was also really grainy and the fluffy snow didn’t feel as good in my mouth.

Sharon

When do you add the sugar? It doesn’t tell you in the receipt

Leigh-Ann Smith

I cook the milk, sugar and vanilla together until the sugar is dissolved. I then stick it in the fridge until the mix is cold. Then, after cooled, I make the ice cream. Hope this helps 🙂

Here we are in the middle of a blizzard, with snow halfway up our sliding doors, eating chicken soup to keep warm. That’s when I happened upon Mama Peggy’s snow icecream recipe. My husband thought I’d lost it, but he did go out and harvest 4 cups of beautiful, white snow. I made the ice cream with heavy cream. My husband loved it – he said he wouldn’t mind having it again – straight up – vanilla. I put nuts and maple syrup on mine. It was a wonderful ending for our dinner. Thank you so much. Tomorrow I might make another batch – Lord knows we have enough snow 🙂

Emily

I made this with my brothers and sisters and we all lived it

Melody

I live on Yadkin , Courtney community..and my mama always made this for us..And she would let me and my brother make snowballs and she would freeze them in bread bags and we had real snow cones that summer!..I do the snow cream and snowballs for my kids and now grandchildren..still on Yadkin..lol

Starlight
