Thank you! My husband remembers his mother making this, but I never knew her, and have tried my own concoction. He says it’s not the same. I’ll try your recipe!
When I was a child in the early 60s in west Texas, a neighbor lady would make this for her daughter and any other child lucky enough to be there. I have not seen it since. My sister and I were reminiscing about it the other day. I’m sending this to her. And our beloved mom’s name was Peggy Jean. When was mamapeggy born?
I grew up on this for breakfast (what a treat!) because my Mother was treated with it. She was from Clinton NC and I still have family there, although I haven’t been back for years. When I was a kid (I’m 63 now) we’d go to my Mom’s great Aunt’s house and ask for chocolate “sop” for breakfast and my Aunt Eula would laugh and say – “we only fixed it cause we were poor”. My family made it with water and without the vanilla (maybe because they were poor!). I’m gonna fix your recipe for it tomorrow morning!
This is so much better if you get a tsp of peanut butter and put the spoon in a bowl and pour the Tracy over it and dunk your bread or biscuit down in it, I heat my milk to boiling then slowly add the milk and sugar and flour that is the only ingredients I use but I wouldn’t want it without a dollop of peanut butter to kill the bitter of then chocolate!
Pour the gravy I meant … Auto correct ugh!
My grandma, who lived in the Ozarks, used to make this for us kids, both big and small. She and I played around one weekend, trying to come up with an actual recipe, as she had always just cooked it by taste. LOVE this stuff!!!
My family is from the Ozarks, also. It is a common thing to have chocolate gravy. Yum yum.
I was first introduced to this by Peggy. It did not sound so good but when she gave me a plate of it with her yummy biscuits I was hooked. Thanks for posting this recipe. I miss her so much.
I’m gonna make me some while I’m being bad this Christmas! 🙂
I remember eating this many mornings at Peggy’s when she lived in Blacksburg. Delicious!
