One of the most requested “recipes” people have asked about is Mama Peggy’s recipe for ranch dressing. She didn’t do anything fancy, but rather just used the Hidden Valley Original Ranch mix to make her ranch dressing, mixed with buttermilk instead of milk. A lot of Southern cooks have done this, from way back. It only seemed like magic because most people don’t make their own dressing anymore, and store-bought bottles of dressing are never going to be as good as fresh. So, the secret to making your Ranch dressing taste like Mama Peggy’s is to substitute buttermilk for the milk that the mix packets call for. And, of course, use Duke’s mayonnaise if at all possible.
Peggy’s Ranch Dressing
Mama Peggy, and thousands of other Southern cooks, made buttermilk ranch dressing way before it was cool. Fresh made dressing will beat out store-bought bottled dressing every time.

Notes
The secret to making your Ranch dressing taste like Mama Peggy’s is to use Duke’s mayonnaise, and substitute buttermilk for the milk that the mix packets call for. Other than that, just follow the directions on the Hidden Valley Ranch packets. As Mama Peggy often said, “Lord, it’s the simplest thing in the world!”
