Peggy's Ranch Dressing

One of the most requested “recipes” people have asked about is Mama Peggy’s recipe for ranch dressing. She didn’t do anything fancy, but rather just used the Hidden Valley Original Ranch mix to make her ranch dressing, mixed with buttermilk instead of milk. A lot of Southern cooks have done this, from way back. It only seemed like magic because most people don’t make their own dressing anymore, and store-bought bottles of dressing are never going to be as good as fresh. So, the secret to making your Ranch dressing taste like Mama Peggy’s is to substitute buttermilk for the milk that the mix packets call for. And, of course, use Duke’s mayonnaise if at all possible.

Ingredients

  • ▢ — 2 packs Hidden Valley Original Ranch dressing mix (1 oz)
  • ▢ — 2 cups buttermilk
  • ▢ — 2 cups Duke’s mayonnaise

Instructions

  • ▢ — In a bowl, combine milk, mayonnaise and contents of mix packets.
  • ▢ — Mix well.
  • ▢ — Cover and refrigerate.
  • ▢ — Chill 30 minutes to thicken.
  • ▢ — Stir before serving.
  • ▢ — Will yield enough to fill a 24 oz salad dressing bottle.

Note

The secret to making your Ranch dressing taste like Mama Peggy’s is to use Duke’s mayonnaise, and substitute buttermilk for the regular milk that the mix packets call for. Other than that, just follow the directions on the Hidden Valley Ranch packets.

As Mama Peggy often said; “Lord, it’s the simplest thing in the world!”
